Delivering Discovery – Artrain’s Mobile Museum Units
For 40 years, Artrain has “delivered discovery” to people in under-resourced communities throughout the United States by developing and touring art,
cultural and education programs. Until recently Artrain used a train museum traveling on the U.S. rail system as its primary source to deliver these
programs and successfully meet its mission of using the power of art and culture to transform lives, organizations and communities. Overtime, access
to communities via the rails became more and more limited. In order to continue to serve its mission, Artrain is now delivering cultural programs and
exhibitions of all types – art, cultural, history, sciences, etc. – and outreach, education, community engagement and capacity building programs to people
everywhere through a variety of methods including mobile touring exhibitions on Mobile Museum Units (MMUs.) Artrain commissioned the designs of the
MMUs – state-of-the-art expandable semitrailers – to meet Artrain's long-standing tradition of replicating museum facility standards for environment and security.
Each MMU provides approximately 1,000 square feet of gallery space while on location and multiple MMUs can be connected to increase the available exhibition space.
Among the many benefits of Artrain’s MMUs are:
- Being able to visit practically any city in the US;
- Being able to visit more communities per project and welcome more visitors;
- Being able to develop more programs and exhibitions simultaneously
- Having complete control over scheduling and logistics;
- Eliminating long periods of "downtime” due to limited railroad schedules;"
- Having more flexibility to schedule longer and shorter visits;
- Being able to accommodate "impromptu" visits.
