January 13, 2007 – At a White House ceremony, Artrain was presented with the 2006 National Medal for Museum and Library Service. The award is the
federal government’s highest honor for community service provided to a museum or library. The annual award is given to six institutions by the
Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) for outstanding community service with each winning institution awarded $10,000. Artrain joined five
other institutions as 2006 medal recipients including the Lincoln Children's Zoo in Lincoln, NE; the Frankfort Community Public Library in
Frankfort, IN; the John G. Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, IL; the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County in Charlotte, NC; and the San
Antonio Public Library in San Antonio, TX. The IMLS is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 122,000 libraries and 17,500 museums.
The Institute's mission is to create strong libraries and museums that connect people to information and ideas. The Institute works at the national
level and in coordination with state and local organizations to sustain heritage, culture and knowledge; enhance learning and innovation; and
support professional development.
